Vancouver
Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It has that rare combination of mild climate, beautiful natural surroundings, as well as reminders of its fascinating history and culture that can be seen everywhere. It is no wonder that this city is a magnet for not only other Canadians but people from all over the world.
The population of Vancouver is 2 million, making it the 3rd largest city in Canada. It is also an international city with a broad and diverse mix of cultures and peoples. In fact, Vancouver's Chinese population is well over 200,000, making it the 2nd largest Chinese-populated city in Canada.
A large part of Vancouver's attraction is its gentle and clement weather, so unlike the rest of Canada. Due to the effect of the warm Pacific Ocean currents, its winter is generally mild, with mostly rain or light snow from time to time. In summer, it is neither too hot nor cold, making for an extremely pleasant and livable environment year-round.
Due to these natural and man-made advantages Vancouver is the only city in the world in which you can ski in the morning, play tennis in the afternoon, and dine in an Asian restaurant and enjoy a Broadway show in the evening.
Montreal
Montreal is situated near the St. Lawrence River. Its population is 2.8 million, almost half of the Province of Quebec's 6.2 million people. Quebec is the biggest province in Canada and its population accounts for about a quarter of Canada's population. Montreal is its major commercial and tourist hub. In addition to its aerospace, pharmaceutical and other high-tech industries, Montreal is renown for its nightlife, European style joie de vivre, and fine dining. In Montreal it is never possible to get bored dining out because one has over 10,000 restaurants representing almost every conceivable culinary tradition to choose from.
Toronto
Toronto is a world-class international city. It is Canada's most populous metropolis and as such acts as its financial and commercial center, as well as the home of numerous ethnic and cultural communities. In addition to this Toronto and its surroundings form Canada's industrial heart. Despite this, though, Toronto still manages to be a very livable city, with an abundance of parks, gardens and rural bedroom communities.
Toronto has something for everyone: parks, museums, art galleries, high fashion, performances of all kinds, and restaurants and shopping galore. While it may be possible to get bored in Toronto it is not easy to do!
Calgary
Calgary is the 2nd largest city in Canada by area and is the heart of what Canadians call 'The New West'. While it is well known as the capital of Canada's oil industry, the past twenty years has seen a diversification of its economy into such areas as manufacturing and high-tech. As the economy has grown, so has its population. According to the Civic Census, the population of Calgary as of 1998 exceeded 800,000 and is expected reach one million by the year 2008. Such rapid growth is spectacular, but Calgary will still be able to retain its livability and charm. Despite its size it is still possible to be out of the city within half an hour. Calgary has a provincial park within its city limits, and the city is riddled with parks, bike paths, and running areas. Given the accessibility of nature it is no wonder that Calgarians are addicted to the outdoors. Skiing, skating, biking, golfing, running and
horseback riding are just some of the popular pursuits in this out-doors oriented city.
