1. Meet the following three requirements:
(a) entered Canada legally as a permanent resident;
(b) according to section 24 of the Immigration Act the permanent resident status has not been
suspended;
(c) have lived in Canada for at least 3 years in the 4 years immediately prior to application for
citizenship. All these three basic residency requirements have to be met.
 (a) In order for an adult to apply for citizenship, he/she must have first got an immigration visa.
 (b) If he/she lived outside Canada for over 183 days within a year, he/she is deemed to have relinquished Canada as a permanent residency, unless he/she can prove otherwise.
 (c) Within the 4 years immediately prior to his/her application for citizenship, he/she must have lived in Canada for 3 years accumulatively. However, the definition of residency is not limited to personal residency. When calculating years of residency, every day lived in Canada subsequent to the permanent resident's landing in the country counts. In addition, every day lived in Canada prior to landing is calculated as half day. If the applicant was married to a Canadian civil servant sent overseas, so long as he/she lived with his/her spouse, every day lived overseas still counts.
2. Can use one of the official languages, i.e. English or French. The applicant must have the
ability to use common English or French.'
 (a) Can use appropriate words in non-occupational activities and in daily life.
 (b) Can understand simple statements and questions, be they present tense, past tense or future tense.
 (c) Can correctly use simpe present tense, past tense and future tense verbally.
3. Fully understand the rights and obligations of Canadian citizens.
4. Has never been ordered to leave Canada, nor subject to the restrictions declared by
Governor-in-Council in accordance with section 20 of the Immigration Act.
5. Has reached 18.
6. Has made an application.
